Students were assigned a landform, mine the Badain Jaran Desert, Alxa, China, to analyze, represent, and materialize. Layers of synthesizing mediums and methods produced visual composite graphics and bas reliefs. A new precedent was assigned, TAO’s Viewing Pavilion on a Hill, and the same synthesis exercise was repeated and expanded upon. Bas relief models were a key part of this exercise, pushing to use atypical methods and materials to translate the landform’s data into the 3D.
