Drawing on Stan Allen’s 1997 “Field Conditions” as a lens through which one can perceive and respond to the spatial distribution of physical construction within a site, this project adopts and further explores the forms and systems that are inherent to center pivot irrigation. Located on a site in Imperial City, San Diego, one of the most biodiverse regions within the U.S., this culinary institute and irrigation research lab, “groundscraper”, is formed through transformed offsets that carve into the ground forming open courtyards, water retention ponds, and circulation space. Extending this landscape system towards building interior space, extruded offset arcs form programmatic space and tiered testing plots. Synthesizing the pivot irrigator’s rigid grid organization and tectonic span, steel bars fashion vertical testing gardens that adorn each overpass with lavish flora, guiding visitors from space to space.
