HULKEN POP-UP in-person site research performed over 1-month
CITIES OF THE NEAR FUTURE
ARC509 TYO>>>SEL Design Studio led by Bing Bu Course Collaboration w/ University of Seoul
With pop-up typologies becoming more and more integrated as an urban infrastructure that manifests a trends’ lifespan, our 1-month studio in Seoul attempts to define the ‘pop-up’. We selected a sitespecific brand/product to display at our location in Euljiro, a printing and electronics district of Seoul. We photo-documented and mapped a 6-block radius-- noticing our own trends of the site. My focus was found on the different pedestrian momentums throughout various zones. I was fascinated by the ability to reroute your understanding of moving through urban space by the speed, pace, or rhythms of the built environment. The “surge” of crowds at subway exits. The “drift” from the path by the stream to rest. The verbs of traffic that silently define the operation of the city. I chose a brand named “Hulken”, a modern grannycart emerging in urban spaces like New York and Berlin, to act as my brand collaborator in order to support the pedestrian flow of this densley networked site.
The pop-up would initiate at Sewoon Plaza in Euljiro, Seoul. Two elevated walkways frame the overpass that sits above the Cheonggyecheong stream, acting as our boundary. Reflecting the industrial structure, material emphasis, and ease of portability as the Hulken product and site, these modular pop-ups would be constructed on the tricycle for ease of mobility. Smaller scale pop-ups would roam through the streets and alleys, offering modern and deconsonstructable support in the same way users would use the product. Emulating the lightweight nature of the bag, glowing square balloons fastened with metal tubes suspend into the air. Acting as a signal of invitation, smaller scale balloons sprawl onto the landscape of the stream, inviting pedestrians to engage.
