125th Manhattanville St.
Gensler Intern Summer Studio supervised by Tyler Davenport + Dylan Roberts
Research Initiative led by Tom Lanzelotti

The MTA in New York City recently celebrated their 120th anniversary--but they also just raised their fares. With all of this extra income, our 2025 intern summer studio at Gensler hypothesized what ammends or could be made to these public infrastructures. Our site, 125th Manhattanville St., proved itself a beloved icon of the area-- with all students, tourists, and locals we interviewed at the site. We decided to celebrate it rather than redo it-- ‘filling in the gaps’ as the core theme of our presentation. Ammending what it is lacking such as ADA accessible elevators to reach the 70’ tall platform. We proposed a steel constructed frame patched with biodegradable and recycled tiles that would form waste funnels. We wanted to honor the historic structure that exists while supporting a range of new visitors.

~6hrs/week x 3.5 months were dedicated to this project during the 40hr/week summer internship. All drawings featured belong to me excluding the plans by David Ambul.
We wanted to create a visual marvel for pedestrians noticing the station in passing. The structure opens up for easy access to the bins resting at the bottom of the funnels. The discard is maintained and confined to a single circumference. The form of the net’s structural frame is reflecting the symmetry of the historical viaduct. It opens up its wind guards at the top elevation where the existing walls remain. Similarly-- it raises itself up from the ground to maintain the exposed industrial viaduct steel frame.
